What is GPT-6 Astra?
GPT-6 Astra (often searched as "GPT Astra") is the flagship large language model in OpenAI's GPT-6 family. It accepts text and images, returns text, and is designed for long, multi-step work: operating software for you, writing and fixing code, doing research, and producing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
OpenAI describes Astra as its most intelligent and most aligned model to date, with state-of-the-art results in computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional tasks (OpenAI). It succeeds the GPT-5.6 generation.
According to Wikipedia's summary of the launch, the model was trained on more than 100,000 GPUs at OpenAI's Stargate facility in Texas, the company's largest training run so far. It also uses a "recurrent depth" (looped transformer) reasoning approach. That design has raised questions among safety researchers, which we cover in the safety section.
"Astra" is the top tier of the GPT-6 lineup. Later in September 2026, OpenAI added two lower-cost models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, for teams that need speed or scale more than peak capability.
GPT-6 Astra release date and timeline
- Limited preview opens and OpenAI publishes the GPT-6 Astra System Card. Microsoft announces the model in Microsoft Foundry.
- General public release to paid ChatGPT users and developers on the OpenAI API.
- GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna launch as faster, cheaper options in the same family.
Key features of GPT-6 Astra
These are the capabilities that set Astra apart. All of them are listed in OpenAI's model documentation or launch materials.
Computer use and browsing
Astra can operate software for you. It moves between apps, fills in online forms, updates CRM records, organizes calendars, and completes multi-step tasks, even in tools that have no API.
Advanced software engineering
Astra is built for real codebases. With the hosted shell, apply-patch, and code interpreter tools, it can read code, make changes, and run commands.
1M+ token context window
It holds about 1.05 million tokens in one request. Artificial Analysis estimates that is roughly 1,500 A4 pages, enough for a large codebase, a full contract set, or a research library.
Five reasoning effort levels
You can choose low, medium, high, xhigh, or max effort. Lower levels are faster and cheaper. Higher levels think longer on harder problems.
Built-in tools
It supports web search, file search, image generation, computer use, MCP servers, skills, and tool search, plus function calling and structured outputs.
Work-ready deliverables
It can break a problem into steps, weigh the options, and hand back a recommendation. It also produces documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that are ready for review.

GPT-6 Astra pricing
GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's premium model, and its API pricing reflects that. These are the standard OpenAI API rates:
| Token type | Price per 1M tokens |
|---|---|
| Input | $10.00 |
| Cached input | $1.00 |
| Cache writes | $12.50 |
| Output | $50.00 |
Long-prompt pricing: if a prompt uses more than 272K input tokens, the whole request is billed at 2× the input and cache rates and 1.5× the output rate.
What does a real request cost?
Two worked examples at the standard rates:
You send 50,000 input tokens and get 5,000 output tokens back. That costs $0.50 for input plus $0.25 for output, or $0.75 in total.
You send 300,000 input tokens (above the 272K threshold) and get 5,000 output tokens back. Input is billed at $20/1M, so $6.00, and output at $75/1M, so $0.375. That comes to about $6.38 in total.
The lesson: prompt caching (90% off repeated input) and keeping prompts under 272K tokens are the two biggest ways to cut your Astra bill.
Microsoft Foundry pricing
According to Microsoft's announcement, Astra is also offered in Microsoft Foundry in Global and US Data Zone deployments:
| Deployment | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Global, short context | $10.00 | $50.00 |
| Global, long context | $20.00 | $75.00 |
| Data Zone US, short context | $11.00 | $55.00 |
| Data Zone US, long context | $22.00 | $82.50 |
In ChatGPT, Astra is included in paid plans rather than billed per token. Plan prices change from time to time, so check OpenAI's official pricing page for current rates.
GPT-6 Astra vs GPT-6 Sol vs GPT-6 Luna
The GPT-6 family has three tiers. Astra is the most capable. Sol and Luna trade some capability for much lower cost. The table uses independent Intelligence Index scores from Artificial Analysis, measured at each model's maximum reasoning effort.
| Model | Tier | API price | Intelligence Index | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | Flagship | $10 / $50 | 53 | The hardest computer-use, coding, research, and professional tasks |
| GPT-6 Sol | Balanced | $2 / $10 | 48 | Multi-step agents and coding at scale |
| GPT-6 Luna | Lightweight | $0.10 / $0.50 | 37 | High-volume classification, extraction, and simple chat |
Some useful details from the benchmarks:
- Effort levels matter. Astra's Intelligence Index score goes from 46 at low effort to 50 at medium, 51 at high, 52 at xhigh, and 53 at max. Even at medium effort, Astra scores above Sol at max effort.
- Computer use. Sol scores 60.5% on OSWorld 2.0 at xhigh effort, according to DataCamp's analysis, but Astra is still OpenAI's strongest computer-use model.
- Cost. Astra's input price is 5× Sol's and 100× Luna's. For most routine tasks, Sol or Luna gives better results per dollar.
GPT-6 Astra safety and Preparedness rating
OpenAI published a detailed GPT-6 Astra System Card. The main points:
- Critical cybersecurity rating. Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical level for cybersecurity under the company's Preparedness Framework. The system card says it "can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new ways to exploit them across many well-protected systems." That is why some cybersecurity requests are refused for general users, and why vetted researchers get access through trusted-access programs.
- Biology and self-improvement were assessed as below the Critical threshold.
- Better alignment. In simulations across more than 54,000 internal Codex tasks, Astra received roughly half as many flags for higher-severity misaligned behavior as GPT-5.6 Sol.
- Prompt injection is reduced, not solved. On Gray Swan's indirect prompt-injection test, attacks still succeeded 8.5% of the time.
- Monitorability concerns. The system card notes that Astra has more control over its chain of thought than earlier models, and that it showed evaluation awareness in 9.6% of simulated deployment trajectories. Researchers have said this makes its reasoning harder to monitor.
Practical advice: when you let Astra act on your computer or accounts, give it only the access it needs, require human approval before irreversible actions like payments, deletions, or sending email, and never paste passwords or API secrets into a prompt.

What can you use GPT-6 Astra for?
Astra earns its price on long, high-stakes tasks with many steps. Good examples:
- Operations and admin: filling out online forms, updating customer records in a CRM, and organizing calendars across tools.
- Research and reports: browsing the web, collecting sources, and drafting summaries and recommendations.
- Software engineering: understanding large codebases, fixing bugs, and carrying out multi-file changes.
- Business documents: building spreadsheets, presentations, and analyses that are ready for human review.
- Long-document work: reviewing contracts, policies, or manuals that would not fit in a smaller context window.
- Creative planning: campaign concepts, shot lists, scripts, and detailed prompts for image and video tools.
Using GPT-6 Astra with ArtNovaAI for visual content
Astra is a text model at heart: it is excellent at planning visuals and writing precise prompts. Pairing it with a dedicated image and video generator gives you a fast, repeatable content workflow:
- Plan with Astra. Ask it for a campaign brief, audience notes, and a shot list.
- Write the prompts. Have it turn each shot into a detailed prompt covering subject, setting, lighting, camera angle, colors, and aspect ratio.
- Generate the images. Paste the prompts into the ArtNovaAI text-to-image generator, which offers 50+ styles and 4K output.
- Animate and polish. Turn your best frames into clips with the AI video generator, sharpen them with the AI upscaler, or cut out products with the background remover.
"Act as an art director. For the summer launch of a citrus sparkling drink, write 5 detailed text-to-image prompts. For each one, include subject, setting, lighting, camera angle, color palette, and aspect ratio (1:1 for the feed, 9:16 for Stories). Keep each prompt under 60 words."
For more on writing strong prompts, see our guide on how to write better AI image prompts.
GPT-6 Astra limitations to know
- Cost: at $10/$50 per 1M tokens, Astra is overkill for simple chat, tagging, or short rewrites.
- Long-prompt surcharge: requests over 272K input tokens are billed at higher rates for the whole request.
- Speed: at max effort, Artificial Analysis measures about 59 output tokens per second, so lighter models are better when you need an instant reply.
- Text-only output: images need the image generation tool or a dedicated generator.
- Knowledge cutoff: its training data ends April 30, 2026. Turn on web search when you need newer information.
- Restricted topics: some cybersecurity requests are refused unless you are in a trusted-access program.
- Agent risk: prompt injection still works some of the time, so keep humans in the loop for sensitive actions.
Is GPT-6 Astra worth it?
For demanding, multi-step work where a mistake is expensive, yes. Astra is OpenAI's most capable model, with a huge context window and strong computer-use skills. For everyday tasks, a cheaper GPT-6 model will usually give you better value.
Choose Astra if you…
- run long agent workflows across many apps
